"Unlimited interactive use" simply implies that you can use your account as long as you need it while you use it. Starting a file download that does not repeat itself on a recurring manner is also within this scope. All WebSurfer and WebBusiness accounts include "unlimited interactive use" and implement a 20 minute timeout on inactivity. They are for individual use only or for a family within the same household. WebBusiness accounts can be shared on a network if the network sharing option is requested.

Unattended or 7x24 (7 day x 24 hrs) connections are outside the scope of "unlimited interactive use". For example, you can not use a personal account to start a chat program that will be continuously accessing the Internet for several days. Sharing accounts with your friends or relatives outside your household is also not allowed. Violations to this policy can result in your account being cancelled.

There are no timeouts or usage restrictions on WebEnterprise accounts since those are considered dedicated 7x24 accounts. Customers that require continuous 7x24 usage should consider a WebEnterprise account.

Note that your account setup includes transfering the domain without any additional costs. We recommend you do the transfer only if you are familiar with the procedures required.

Typical domain record changes take 24 to 48 hours. You should plan accordingly to avoid losing any email messages or web visitors.
Changes to mailboxes on virtual domains are normally performed by your domain administrator. The procedure is to login to WebMail using root@domainname (change domainname for your domain name) as username and the password for your dialup account. Then select the "Account Options", "User Administration" to add or remove mailboxes within the number included on your account (usually 15 for WebBusiness acounts and 30 for WebEnterprise accounts) or to change passwords on existing mailboxes.
An alias is another name for an email account. It can be used to allow mail for a given address be sent to one or more recipients. For example, let's say one of your mailboxes is jperez@mydomain. To make things simple you would like your contacts to send mail to juan@yourdomain or juan.perez@yourdomain. This can be done by adding a "juan" and a "juan.perez" alias pointing to the "jperez" mailbox.

You can also use aliases to specify departmental or role accounts. If jperez, mdiaz and prodriguez are on the sales department, you could consider creating an alias called "sales" and point it to those three addresses. That way when someone sends mail to sales@yourdomain, all three get a copy of the message.

To manage aliases, login to WebMail using root@domainname (change domainname for your domain name) as username with the password for your dialup account. Then select the "Alias Administration" option to add or remove aliases on your domain. All domain accounts at PRW.NET can define a virtually unlimited number of aliases.

There is a special processing done on the alias "nobody". All email for your domain that does not contain a valid destination address goes to this alias. If you would like to receive all mail addressed to your domain no matter what is the destination, add an alias called "nobody" pointing to your true email address. This feature should be used with care as it makes your domain more prone to mailing lists that blindly send to unknown recipients.
A list is a group of email addresses that receive email messages sent to the list address. It generally implies a common interest among list members. For example, you could create a list customers@yourdomain and include the addresses of all your customers. When a message is sent to customers@yourdomain, all addresses receive a copy of the message. You have the option of allowing customers to reply to the list or to the moderator.

To manage lists, login to WebMail using root@domainname (change domainname for your domain name) as username with the password for your dialup account. Then select the "List Administration" option to add or remove lists on your domain.

You can also consider creating HTML forms to allow list members to subscribe or unscubscribe from your lists via a web page. We will be posting an example CGI script to do this in the near future.
Business acounts at PRW.NET use virtual domains for email. The username for email should include the domain in the form user@mydomain . For example, if you are user jperez at domain the username for your mailbox will be This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Older email software may not handle correctly an "@" in username. If that is the case with your software, susbtitute the "@" for a "%", e.g. username%mydomain or in the example above.

This is not applicable to current email clients such as Microsoft Outlook 2000, Outlook 98 and Outlook Express.
If you are using Outlok Express, Outlook 98, Outlook 2000 or Netscape Messenger 4.5 or above you can define multiple email accounts on the same profile. Previous versions only handled one email account per profile. If you need to access multiple mailboxes on a single sessions and have an older email program, you need to update to a more current version.
Yes. Domain accounts where the web site is hosted at PRW.NET have available an activity summary at http://www.domainname/admin/analog.cgi (substitute domainname by your domain name). The statistics report provides a summary of the access to all pages on your web site by day of the week, hour of the day and IP address or hostname. You will be required to enter the username and password of your dialup account to see this information. For more information on configuring the statistics page visit the Analog web site. Full access logs are kept for each site so you can use any statistics program that handles standard http logs. Some customers have used Webalizer and WebTrends

We recommend that business accounts consider using the statistics pages rather than using counters since counters are public and allow everybody to see your activity levels.
A FrontPage counter is implemented by creating a small file at the server with the current count. That file has to be initialized with the correct permissions such that when web visitors visit your page, the count is incremented. Remember that normally web visitors can not write on files on your web site. If the counter file is copied from your PC using the "Publish" option, it will not be created with the correct permissions.

To initialize the counter, open your website at the server using FrontPage. Go to the page where you need to have a counter and right-click the mouse at the [Hit Counter] location. Mark the "Reset counter to" checkbox and enter the desired initial value. The counter will be initialized when you save the page. This needs to be done only once for each page where you have a counter. It does not need to be repeated if you republish the page in the future (as long as you use the same filename).
For security reasons, we do not allow FrontPage forms to save results to a file on the server. This would require visitors to your web site to have write access on your web space. Allowing this would make it easy for someone with basic system skills to change files on your area without your permissione. In an extreme case, they could even change your home page or fill your web area (25 MB). We suggest that you consider sending the results of FrontPage forms to an email address or a CGI script. This is supported and has less security risks.

A way to saving the results of a form to a file without compromising the security of your site is to use a CGI script to write to a database. That requires some basic skills in CGI programming and databases.
Some Proxy Servers report your local network IP address instead of their PPP network address. To avoid mail relays, the PRW.NET mail servers reject outgoing (SMTP) requests from IP addresses that are not within our network. If your Proxy behaves this way you need to set the SMTP Authentication option on your email program. If you are using Outlook Express, that option appears as "My server requires authentication".
VPS accounts include a single virtual server. Cloud accounts are based on a resource pool that can be distributed among multiple servers. Cloud accounts can be manages with the VMware vSphere client.

ADSL stands for Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line. It uses the copper cabling used in standard phone lines but uses a different frequency spectrum and allows for much higher speeds than dialup connections. Currently two download speed levels are available: 512 Kbps and 256 Kbps. The upload speed is 128 Kbps.

The main advantages over dialup connections are:

  • SPEED - An ADSL connection offers up to 10 times the performance of an analog line for data transmission. Since the connection is always active, there is also no dialing time involved either.
  • QUALITY - ADSL connections are less likely to be affected by noise or static.
  • FUNCTIONALITY - The ADSL connection uses the same cabling of your phone line but does not interfere with normal phone usage. You can make and receive phone calls even while your ADSL Internet connection is in active use

    To use ADSL you need an ADSL modem or router. The modem is provided by the phone company at a cost of $49.95. The modem will be shipped approximately two weeks after you place your order. This is a discounted rate that requires a 12 month term. If the line is cancelled after the 30 day grace period but before the 12 month term, the phone company will process a charge of $199 on your phone bill. The ADSL modem requires an available ethernet or USB port on your computer.

    Currently customer provided modems are not supported.
    After the modem is shipped, there is a 30 day grace period during which you can cancel the account without any charges, provided you return the modem within that period.
    On DSL accounts 512 Kbps or above, you can use a dialup connection if your ADSL connection goes down. You can not use a dialup connection and the ADSL connection simultaneously. This option is not available on DSL accounts below 512 Kbps.
    There is a $50 setup charge for the ADSL line. The equipment costs are $49.95 with a 12 month term. This makes the total setup cost $99.95 which will be billed on your phone bill after the line is activated.

    There are no setup charges for the PRW Internet access account.
    Yes. Our signup page allows you to order your ADSL service online. The line will be activated and the modem shipped approximately two weeks after the order is placed.     PRW customers can upgrade their dialup account to an ADSL account by visiting the members page.

    The ADSL transport is provided by Puerto Rico Telephone (PRT) and requires an active phone line billed by PRT. The ADSL transport uses your existing phone line cabling and connects you directly to PRW.NET. PRW.NET provides your Internet access, email accounts and other services included with the account you selected.
    No. After you fill out the authorization form, we will process your ADSL line activation with the phone company on your behalf.

    Note that charges for the ADSL transport line will be billed by the phone company on your monthly phone bill. PRW will only bill you for the Internet access.
    The ADSL line is billed on your monthly phone bill. The monthly charges are $26.00 for the 256 Kbps line and $41.00 for the 512 Kbps line.

    The Internet access on your ADSL line is billed by PRW.NET using your desired payment method. Rates start at $13.95 per month. Please visit our services page for all options available. Payments by credit card or bank debit are billed every month. All other payment types are billed every two months.
    Personal and webhosting accounts include dynamic IPs. Static IPs are available on Enterprise accounts. Please visit our services page for options and pricing.
    We recommend that for ADSL you use a line that is not part of your PBX or multi-line phone system. You can consider lines used for fax machines, credit card POS systems or dialup modems.     First, you need to create your web pages with the content desired. For this you need an HTML editor. Two popular ones are FrontPage Express and Nestscape Messenger which are included at no charge with Internet Explorer and Nestcape respectively.

    Second, you need to copy the pages to your directory on our server. The URL for your directory is:

    where "username" is substituted for the username you use to login. If you are using Internet Explorer 5 you can upload and download the files directly from the browser. Otherwise you can use an FTP program specifying as the hostname with you username/password. Files should be copied to the "html" subdirectory. The main file should be called "index.html", "index.shtml", "index.cgi", "index.htm", "home.html", "home.htm" or "default.htm" (the server checks in that order, in lowercase).

    Once you have uploaded your pages they will be acecssible from the Internet at the following URL:

    Remember that you the content of your pages should be of public nature and that they should not contain materia of an offensive or discriminatory nature. Violations to copyrights or pornographic content are not allowed on sites hosted at PRW and could lead to immediate account deactivation.

    If you plan to do extensive editing, we suggest that you consider a professional HTML editor such as FrontPage 2000. Support for FrontPage 2000 is included on business accounts with no additional charges and on personal accounts with a $ 2 monthly charge(including a subdomain).
    Yes. You can redirect your visitors to a certain page when an error occurs, including page not found (error 404) and internal server error (error 500, generally caused by a problem on a cgi script). On sites hosted with Linux/Apache just add two lines to the ".htaccess" file on your "html" directory similar to these examples:

    This can be useful to handle broken links, scripts that are being tested, etc. Instead of getting a generic error message, the visitor will get the page you specified.

    NOTE: Be careful not to change existing lines on the ".htacess" file since that may affect other functions such as the Frontpage extensions.
    Database support is included with business and enterprise accounts. Sites hosted under Linux can use MySQL and sites hosted under Windows 2000 can use MS Access with no additional charges. The disk space used by the database will be part of your webhosting disk space.

    Note that MS Access is not appropiate for sites with medium to high activity due to performance and other concerns. For sites expecting high activity levels and requiring high performance and reliability should consider our MS SQL option.
    Yes. Besides the mailbox assigned to your dialup username, personal accounts with unlimited access can add up to four additional mailboxes (for a total of five) at no additional cost. These emails can be created by visiting the Members page and selecting the "Additional Emails" option. The mail domain for the additional accounts is PRMAIL.NET. To find out how to configure your additional mailboxes on your email software press here. You can also change or delete the additional mailboxes by visiting the Members page.

    If you do not need POP3 access, you can also consider free email services such as Yahoo!, Hotmail, Netscape or USA.NET.
    For a POP3 email program (Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape Messenger) the configuration would be as follows:

    Go into WebMail and select "Change Forwarding Information" on the Options menu. Then enter the desired address on the space provided.

    Note that you forward to multiple email addresses by entering each address separated by a comma. You can also keep a copy of your messages on the current mailbox by entering "." (do not enter your address again). For example, if you would like to forward your mail to This email address is being protected from spambots.     Go into WebMail and select the "Change Vacation Message" option. Enter the desired text when prompted. The text you enter will be sent to each email address that sends you a message with "automated response" as the subject. The system will keep track of who has received your message so they will not receive the same message twice. The automatic reply feature is useful when you will not be reading your email for a few days. Nowadays people assume that an email message will get a prompt response. A message indicating when they can receive a response shows good email etiquette. Note that all messages received will still go to your mailbox for later reading.

    This feature is useful for business accounts too. For example, you can set up an 'This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ' mailbox where customers get an instant reply with basic company information and links for specific subject areas. You can also use it to send acknowledgements that a form has been received.

    The vacation message is sent only one per recipient. If someone sends you five messsages, they will get a single automated reply. If you would like to send a reply to each message, use the "Change Processing Rules" option and create a rule.
    Yes. The easiest way to retrieve your email from a connection outside PRW.NET is by using WebMail. If you need to send email while on a connection outside our network you have two alternatives:

    1. Use the mail server of the remote ISP as "outgoing mail server". The "incoming mail server" should still be (or for business accounts) since that is where your mailbox is located.

    2. Activate "SMTP Authentication" on your email program. If you are using Outlook Express that is the option called "My server requires authentication" on the definition of your email servers (Tools, Accounts, Properties). Note that some ISPs block outbound ESMTP connections. "SMTP Authentication" will not work in those cases.

    This authentication is necessary to insure that only PRW.NET customers use our mail servers and that no "mail relays" are allowed. This is a common practice among ISPs.
    This is usually cause by a corrupt mail folder. To correct it you need to rebuild your mail folders. If you are using Outlook Express or Outlook 2000 just go to File, Folders and select "Compact All Folders". This will rebuild your folder indexes and may take a few minutes if you have a lot of messages.

    The most common reason for this problem is an improper shutdown, e.g. turning your system off without a shutdown. Mail folders are indexed in a way similar to databases. If you updated a mail folder and turn your system off, the indexes could be corrupt so the pointer to the second message could actually be pointing to the third, etc. To avoid this, please follow the shutdown procedures recommended by your operating system vendor.

    If the problem persists you may have a message that has data on its header that is not handled correctly by your email program. We have seen some mailing list programs or web forms produce messages with headers that do not comply with email standards. To correct this, log into your mailbox via WebMail and delete the message where your email program stops reading.
    Most modern email programs allow you to setup multiple email accounts on a single PC or user profile. Examples are Outlook Express 4, Outlook 98, Netscape Messenger 4.5 or above.

    If some of your email accounts are at other ISPs in most cases you will need to use the PRW.NET server for your outgoing mail ( to avoid mail relay blocks.
    You have at least three alternatives. The first is to use WebMail. By using a browser based email client, you store your email at the server so each mailbox will be stored separately. Remember that the default mailbox size is 10 MB so you should periodically download messages to avoid reaching this limit.

    The second is to change the "shared" mode to a "per user" mode. This will create a separate directory for each login account and therefore a separate mailbox.

    The other is to use the Inbox Assistants in Outlook Express or Messenger to direct mail from each address to a different folder.

    If your goal is to keep messages secure, keep in mind that Windows 95 and Windows 98 are very weak in terms of security. It would not be difficult for someone with basic system skills to read mailboxes on other user directories. If you need better security, consider Windows NT.
    For an analog 56 K modem to connect at 56 Kbps, conditions have to be ideal. For example, noise and static on the line have to be negligible. In some areas the FCC limits the maximum connect speed on standard analog lines to 53 Kbps due to restrictions on the power transmitted on the phone circuit. At PRW.NET we find that over 90 % of our V.90 connections occur between 42 and 53 Kbps. If you are achieving connection rates in this range, your connection is probably fine. If you are achieving lower connection rates, there are several areas to look at.
    All dial-in lines at PRW.NET are capable of V.90 connections and use digital trunks. V.90 is the market standard for 56 K modem connections. If your modem uses an older 56 K protocol (K56Flex or X2) you should consider an update. In most cases, V.90 updates to older 56 K modems are free. If your modem implements the V.90 protocol and still connects at or below 33.6 Kbps, the more common reasons are:
    1. The V.90 implementation on your modem needs an update. The V.90 standard de V.90 was released in Feb-98 and we have seen many manufacturers (particularly with generic modems) issue updates to fix problems on their original implementations. You can visit the web site of your modem manufacturer to verify this. and list the URLs for most popular modem manufacturers.
    Given the evolution of the V.90 standard it is generally advisable to use modems from a major vendor such as 3Com/USRobotics, Zoom, Diamond, etc. that has the resources to follow the changes in this protocol.
    2. Your phone line is not capable of 56 K connections. For V.90 connections an important requirement is that in the path from the phone line used by your modem and that of the ISP there should be no more than one analog trunk or switch. 3Com/USRobotics offers a phone line that you can use to test if yioru line is capable of 56 K connections. Instructions can be found at:
    The V.90 standard was developed to take advantage on phone line conditions that, although common, do not exist on all phone lines.

    If high performance is very important for you, the best solution is to request an ISDN line. ISDN is a digital line where noise or static are not an issue and connections are consistently 64 or 128 Kbps (one or two channels). You can read more about ISDN here.
